Chaski Quartet: Intaglio

Colorado 2025

Described in the Gunnison Country Times as making “music for human connection,” Chaski Quartet returns to Colorado this summer for 7 concerts across the state, including 5 performances within Colorado Department of Corrections Facilities.

“The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.”

Inspired by this (possibly apocryphal) Michelangelo quote, this year for Chaski has been focused on uncovering what lies beneath the surface.

Our goal with this program has been to uncover the messages that live within each work, ready to be revealed in performance.

We’ve been carving through the dense rhythms and harmonies of Antonin Dvorak’s Opus 106,

embracing the negative space in works like Jesse Montgomery’s “Smoke” and Samuel Barber’s “Adagio,”

learning to dance in new ways with Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s “5 Fantasiestücke,”

warming ourselves in the rays of Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Sunrise” quartet,

and placing ourselves somewhere between the disco and the gear shift for Judd Greenstein’s “Four on the Floor.”

The music is already playing. We just choose where to bring it and chisel away.

Since meeting in 2019, the Chaski Quartet has become known for their commitment to immersive concert experiences, audience development, and innovative programming. Recent concerts have included works by George Walker, Gabriela Lena Frank, Jessie Montgomery, and Jennifer Higdon, alongside works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Dvorak. In demand as clinicians and instructors, Chaski has coached extensively and performed for over 2000 students.
